A massive explosion occurs near Tunguska in northern Siberia. The exact nature of the explosion remains unknown, though it levels trees for miles around. Scientists later theorize that a comet or meteor struck the Earth.

April 6, 1917
United States declares war on Germany and enters World War I.

Albert Zerstoiten (Dr. Destroyer) is born.
1918
Corporal Adolf Hitler, serving on the Western Front in World War I, is temporarily blinded by mustard gas. While undergoing treatment, he has a vision that the Teutonic Gods have selected him for a great purpose, which he translates as restoring the purity of the Aryan people and bestowing on Germany the “Thousand-Year Reich.” He gives up his career in art and goes into politics, becoming the leader of the National Socialist Party after the war.

The Reverend Elder and Vincent Dimitrios face Tyrannon the Conqueror as he attempts to invade Earth’s dimension. The magicians trick him into swearing that he will not attempt to invade again while they live.

The Raven is first seen fighting crime on the streets of Hudson City.

Transatlantic commercial telephone service begins, New York to London.

DEMON is formally created in Salem, Massachusetts as a satanic criminal organization and cult, made up of wealthy businessmen and hired thugs.
July 1932
The Phantom begins terrorizing the criminal elements of Hollywood in his successful crime-fighting style.

Television first publicly broadcast from the Empire State Building.

Edward VIII abdicates the throne of England.

Chinese and Japanese troops clash, beginning the struggle that will become World War II.

Black Fin is expelled from the Kingdom of Atlantis. She refuses an offer to join the Zodiac.
Jan. 1939
Philip Colt finds the mystic Amulet of Speed that turns him into the speedster known as the White Disk.
July 10, 1940
Battle of Britain begins.
Oct. 1940
Gretchen Blanchard goes into action as Blue Beacon.
The Red Skull makes his first appearance.
April 27, 1941
Nabu releases the repressed memories of Kent Nelson’s father’s death. Kent lashes out, apparently killing Nabu. However, this was all part of Nabu’s plan to finish Kent’s training. Nabu’s spirit inhabits the helmet of Dr. Fate.

Steve Rogers is given the Super Soldier formula and becomes Captain America.
Sept. 1941
The Justice Society of America forms becoming the world’s first superhero team. Among its founding members are the Green Lantern, the Flash, Dr. Fate, Hawkman, the Atom and others.
Dec. 7, 1941
The Japanese successfully attack the Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii thrusting the United States into World War II.
Dec. 8, 1941
The United States formerly declares war against Japan. Great Britain also declares war on Japan.
Jan. 1942
President Roosevelt charters the Forces of Liberty. The founding members are American Weapon, Protector, the Phantom, Dr. Dimension, Blue Beacon and the White Disk. Victory Siren, Captain America and Red Glare soon join them.

Lt. Colonel James Doolittle leads carrier based planes in a raid on Tokyo.
Dec. 2, 1942
 Enrico Fermi directs and controls the first nuclear chain reaction beneath the bleachers of Staff Field at the University of Chicago, ushering in the nuclear age.
Dec. 8, 1942
U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt and British prime minister Winston Churchill issue a declaration signed by representatives of 26 countries called the “United Nations.”
Jan. 14, 1943
Meeting between Sir Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt begins in Casablanca, Morocco. FDR shares information concerning American superheroes and the war effort.

American Eagle I and Winger battle the Nazi Villain Panzer.

Italy declares war on Nazi Germany.

German army officers try to kill Hitler.
April 10-15, 1945
Dr. Zerstoiten (Destroyer) attempts to escape to South America, but a British warship sinks the transport he is on. His face is badly burned in the fire. He is taken back to London.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies.
April 30, 1945
Adolf Hitler commits suicide.
July 10, 1945
First atomic bomb set off in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
June 24, 1945
Black Fin agrees to join the Zodiac if they can help her repair her gills.
Aug. 1. 1945
American Weapon is exposed to “vita-rays” in an attempt to make her powers permanent. It causes her to become mentally unstable. She tries to detonate a U.S. atomic bomb in its test cradle at Los Alamos and is slain by teammate Red Glare. Her death is publicly blamed on a Nazi saboteur.
Aug. 2, 1945
Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The Master is reported to be at ground zero, but is unscathed. The bomb explosion, and the one in Nagasaki days later, are reportedly the sources of many mutants being born in later generations.

The Forces of Liberty officially disbands.
Dec. 4, 1945
The U.S. Senate approves full U.S. participation in the United Nations.
Jan. 10, 1946
First U.N. General Assembly meets in London.

Zerstoiten leaves the U.S. in anger at his fellow scientists and moves to Central America, where he first becomes known as Dr. Destroyer.

Crimebuster gets married and settles down.
Feb. 9, 1950
Senator Joseph McCarthy announces during a speech that he has a list of 205 communists that had infiltrated the U.S. State Department. He also alleges that many of the country’s superheroes may have communist ties.
Feb. 6, 1952
Elizabeth II becomes queen of the United Kingdom.
March 5, 1953
Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin dies. It is rumored that his spirit somehow survived.
March 30, 1953
Albert Einstein announces his revised Unified Field Theory.
July 27, 1953
Truce ending the Korean War is signed.
1954
Crimebuster and his wife have a son (Elias). After Howard Castleman vows revenge against the hero and his family, Crimebuster changes his name to Robert McQuark and moves to California.
April 7, 1954
The JSA appears before the HUAC. After refusing to reveal their secret identities, the group disbands. Many of the heroes opt to retire. This is generally seen as the end of the Golden Age of Heroes.
May 18, 1954
Blue Beacon appears before the HUAC and is charged with withholding valuable technology from the American government. She makes front page news as she is forced to injure several policemen in her escape.

The U.S. Senate votes 65 to 22 to condemn Senator Joseph McCarthy for conduct unbecoming of a senator.
Jan. 3, 1959
Alaska becomes 49th state.
April 25, 1960
Robert McQuark, alias Crimebuster, dies of a heart attack.
April 12, 1961
Yuri Gagarin becomes the first person to orbit the earth.
June 1961
Caroline Blanchard graduates from college and receives the Blue Beacon suit from her mother, becoming Blue Beacon II.
Feb. 20, 1962
John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit the Earth.
March 16, 1962
Sabrina (Merlinia) Fairchild born in Upstate New York.
May 1962
Caroline Blanchard lands a job with the fledgling U.S. space program as a technician. She fights crime in Florida. Over the years Blue Beacon II becomes associated with NASA, known as a defender of the organization from sabotage.

Winger becomes American Eagle II.
Feb. 4, 1963
The man who would become Dark Seraph (ironically another descendant of Black Paladin and his witch lover) gains the Iron Crown in a vile, demonic ritual outside of London. He kills his entire coven of fellow witches and warlocks and goes forth into the night to cause evil and destruction.
Sept. 1963
The Avengers form to defeat Loki. Founding members are Thor, Ursus, Skymaster, Blue Beacon II and Captain America. Loki is sealed in a cave in Upstate New York. Although the Avengers will be in existence for longer than any other group in history, their membership is one of the least stable, going through more than 40 members in the 36 years they have operated so far.
Phantom II makes his debut, smashing criminal activity in Boston.

May 2, 1964
President Lyndon B. Johnson signs an order bringing PRIMUS into existence, but due to the need for troops and resources in Vietnam, the organization is destined to exist only on paper for more than a decade.
June 17, 1964
The Swordfish is launched by UNTIL.
April 1965
Sigma Squad is formed in New York City. Protector (formerly of the Forces of Liberty) comes out of retirement to found and lead the group.  He gathers around him a group of young heroes who are skilled but lacking in direction.  Founding members were Protector, Lady Liberty II, Sonicman, Alpha, Matrix and Barricade.

The Minutemen form in Boston.
June 1966
Ronald Holmes (Sonicman) and Kate St. John (Lady Liberty II) are married.
July 18, 1966
Dark Seraph attempts to take over SAC in order to start a nuclear war between the U.S. and the USSR. He is stopped by American Eagle II and the Minutemen. American Eagle II joins the Minutemen after the battle is over.
Feb. 10, 1967
The Circle forms, and goes on it first mission against Dark Seraph. They are badly beaten by the villain and only nearly escape death.
Oct. 19, 1967
Black Phantom first appears to help stop a riot caused by racial unrest.
April 4, 1968
Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated by James Earl Ray.
Jun 6, 1968
Black Phantom captures criminal Sirhan Sirhan after he assassinates Senator Robert Kennedy. It is discovered that he has connections with VIPER.
July 20, 1969
Neil Armstrong becomes the first person to walk on the moon.
Oct. 1969
Kate Holmes (Lady Liberty II) gives birth to a son, Ronald Jr.
Dec. 24, 1969
Phillip Stephan Fairchild dies.
